Muizenberg, Cape Town

An art studio addition which will double up as a guest apartment. The site consists of terraces at the back of an existing house. The main challenge of the design was to leave as much of the terrace/garden space open for entertaining/living. Hence it was decided to suspend the building between the upper terrace, which will become a partially covered patio connected to the studio space, and the existing house.

With the building being placed on the Southern boundary, the North facing glazed façade allows for it to act as a platform from where the garden can be experienced. All the existing stone retaining walls and stairs remain as is and will be used to access the studio space.
