Bikini Beach, Gordon's Bay
A renovation project on arguably the most spectacular site in Gordon’s Bay. The original house is a concrete framed building, built in the 1950’s. Although it is modestly sized, the structural concrete work with cantilever beams and slabs create a dramatic effect on the steeply sloped site with its close proximity to the ocean.
Although the project is not treated as a restoration, a hopeful understanding of the intent of the original architect and the client’s contribution in terms of maintaining the modest scale and causing as little disruption to the environment as possible, served as guiding principles for the project. Extensions consist of lightweight steel and timber structures bolted onto the existing concrete framework.
By converting the garage into a living space and utilizing an existing void under the building, the existing house will be converted into three separate units which can also function as a single five-bedroom house.
